Introduction

Handong Global University is a coeducational faith-based university specializing in a holistic model of higher education preparing students to be leaders who address the problems and needs of the 21st century. Founded on Christian principles of personal and social responsibility, Handong emphasizes service to humanity, excellence in academics, and character development. Started 15 years ago, the university currently has an enrollment of approximately 3, 7 00 students , and 120 faculty from all over the world . The student body hails from over 49 different nationalities, and provides a rich cultural atmosphere to Handong emphasis on the brotherhood of humanity. Handong seeks to admit 30% of its incoming freshman classes from non-Korean high schools from abroad. Students from the developing countries receive scholarships from the Papyrus Basket foundation, a very competitive grant offered by generous donors who believe in raising up honest and conscientious leaders from the developing countries.

Handong Global University (HGU) opened its doors of higher education in 1995 at Pohang, South Korea, the world's Capital City of Steel. Cognizant of the accelerated pace of globalization with the onset of the emerging IT age, HGU introduced many innovative programs in the undergraduate educational programs. For example, HGU admitted students without declaring majors and required all students to study English, Chinese, and computer programming during the first two years of study . It has also required them to double major in allied fields, such as language and international relations, business and economics, biotech and food science, electronics and computer, and so forth. For character development, all exams are conducted without supervisors. These were previously unheard of in Korea. For these innovative programs, HGU received excellence awards for educational reforms from the Ministry of Education of Korea for 1996 and 1998 as a model university for the 21st century. HGU was established with a global reach and impact. The academic mission of HGU is uniquely positioned to educate honest and competent global leaders for the technology-driven marketplace of the 21st century.

Is on-campus accommodation available to exchange students?

For the purpose of assistance and adjustment, international students will automatically be placed in the I-House for their first semester. After that, each student may choose to either reapply for the I-House or apply for general dormitory.

Handong Global University's International House (I-House) is a dormitory designed specifically to cultivate students with global minds and knowledge of foreign cultures . Many students with vastly different backgrounds live together in this small community.

I-House accommodates up to 260 residents, with four students assigned to each room. Each room is equipped with a bathroom and shower, four ports for LAN connection and a telephone. I-House also has a student lounge and laundry facilities on each floor, as well as study rooms, seminar rooms, prayer rooms and shared refrigerators.

When can exchange students move in to the Hall of Residence?

You may come one day before orientation starts and orientation starts a week before each semester begins.

PRE-ARRIVAL

Entry Visa

Once you are accepted to the university, yo u will receive a visa entry document from the Admissions Office. This document will provide you with a student visa when you go through Immigration at the Incheon International Airport in Korea. Once you arrive in Pohang and during your orientation, the OICA will assist you in acquiring an Alien Registration card, which you must apply for within 90 days of your arrival to Korea. This card will entitle you to live in Korea as a scholar resident. Visa extension and re-entry permit applications will be the responsibility of the student . Please note that the OICA will be available for any assistance you may need .

Health Insurance & Immunizations

HGU does not require students to show proof of health insurance for acceptance. It is, however, strongly recommended. Students can get health insurance from international insurance companies, such as AIG. Medical fees are less expensive in Korea compared to the U.S., but it can add up. Students without coverage will be expected to pay medical fees upfront. Sunlin Hospital, the nearest local tertiary care hospital, has the latest medical technology and services that one can find and provides HGU students with a 10% -15% discount.

ARRIVAL/ORIENTATION

When should I arrive?

You should plan on arriving one day before orientation week begins. Orientation starts a week before each semester and the exact time and schedule will be sent to you in advance with your acceptance letter.

Is airport reception available?

If students are arriving in groups of four, transportation can be provided with advance reservation by writing an email to the International Affairs Office. The charge per person is $13.

Covering approximately 200 acres, Handong is located in Pohang, South Korea. Pohang boasts one of the fastest growing populations in South Korea, currently numbering approximately 500,000. Pohang City is known to the world as the headquarters for several large steel factories, two of which are Posco and INI Steel. Posco is Korea's largest steel mill which supplies 50-70% of its output toward domestic steel needs , supplying Hyundai Auto manufacturing firms to the west and high-tech cargo ship construction companies to the south.

Pohang is a seaport city renown in the region for its fresh fish markets and its proximity to KyungJu (30 minutes), the ancient Capital city of the Shilla Dynasty. The city is expected to grow by 30% in the next three years with the completion of a new sea cargo port and the development of a new urban center.

Handong is located in the rolling hills of the "North Beach" district of Pohang, between the city itself and the city's new urban center . Perched atop a hill, the campus looks out over the East Sea and surrounding rice fields. A small lake borders the east-side while undeveloped expanse of land borders the southern campus. Only 1/3 of the campus property has been developed; the remaining land is expected to be finished by 2010 with the additional of the UNESCO Education Park .
